This morning we completed the last session of our 6 week Level 1 Carer Information Course facilitated by Louise. We spent a great afternoon delivering training to the wonderful staff at @stwhospice recently. We were looking at communicating with people living with Dementia and how we can support them right through to the end of their Dementia journey. We asked the staff to complete tasks with ear defenders on, large gloves, our goggles on a mat with distracting patterns. The sensory depriving accessories gave the staff an insight into how tasks that appear simple can be made difficult if you are living with Dementia. As we start 2024 we have reflected on how far DISC has come in the last 6 years. We have become a team of 3 (hopefully 4 in the future!). We currently support well over 700 unpaid carers in East Sussex. We now have 8 monthly support groups around East Sussex. We run 20 Carer Information Courses per year. We run 3 activity groups per month. While also supporting carers on a 1to1 basis inbetween providing Professional, Dementia Awareness and DISC Dementia Guide training for businesses. We have been made aware that some charities and non-profit organisations are fundraising in East Sussex although they do not provide support in this area. They are often found in town centres and supermarkets. This stops vital funds from being donated local charities and non – profit organisations, limiting their crucial services. The above are some simple questions you can ask to make sure you know that your money is being spent honestly and in your area. A telltale sign is when a paid fundraiser is being used, they are employed (often across county lines) to fundraise with little training or knowledge of the services provided locally. This is a time of giving and we absolutely encourage contributions to your chosen organisations – we know that big or small, they all make a huge difference. We are coming to the end of #DementiaActionWeek, we have supported many events this week around East Sussex talking about our services, talking with local businesses about how they could benefit from our Dementia Awareness and Professional training to support carers and people living with Dementia. Louise also completed the second session of training for clinical staff at St Wilfrid's Hospice. We were handing out invites to our newest Carer information course at Bowes House in Hailsham while also running our course at The Beacon and Sussex Support Service in Uckfield.
